Kan – Intuition. Paul Hughes Sandan grading, Wimbledon Kempo.

Kan translated as intuition is more than just Ki no sen although that is part of it. It's more than just the animal instinct all creatures are born with. It's something that is cultivated with much practice until it's there in the background of your mind helping to guide your actions or a learned response now subconsciously aiding your actions.

You brain is constantly looking for patters and with enough experience it's will see the patters recurring and immediately guide you. Not magic but amazing when done well and without effort. A good example is when kenshi start practising randori they can find it very difficult to know what to do. After much practice they can perform randori without too much thought by simply following their intuition or Kan, programmed into their subconscious mind. Kan is far more than just something that effects good randori is something that influences you whole life, something that guides you everyday in everything you do. It's there in the background looking for repeating patterns so it can help you.

Kan is created though your experiences if you have a lot of experience your Kan will be strong and so it's important to trust it. Kan is there to help you and once properly cultivated can save your life. It's seen this scenario before many times and lets you know the most probable answer about to arise.

Sen means before an event. If a kenshi is 1 step ahead of an opponent then they have the advantage. Whoever strikes first has an advantage but this has a moral, ethical and legal dilemma.
